My apologies for the tardiness with this last week's work. This week you will examine Citizenship and what you can do as a responsible citizen to contribute back to our nation and be part of creating/forming the ever-shaping Identity of Canada

Language Arts 6J

Mon. June 8th – June 12th

1.     Read 20 minutes silently everyday.

2.     Read and respond to this week’s Common Lit assignment

  • a.      Fish Cheeks” by Amy Tan (short story)
  • b.     Underface” by Shel Silverstein (poem)

3.     Choose one writing choice from the grid below each day.

 

You are living through a time that will go down in history. Write a letter to your future child and describe what your life has been like living during this pandemic especially during shut down.

Write a thank you note to a front line worker in your family who had to go to work each day while we stayed home and safe. Tell them how much you appreciate them going out and doing their job, risking getting sick, to help us all.

How would you like to see this school year end? It was cut short so abruptly, write about what you think would be a perfect ending to the year.

How did the new yellow stage guidelines presently by Premier Higgs change your and/or your family’s life? Does having more businesses open up and being able to gather in groups of under 50 changed your way of life. Write about it.

COMMONLIT READINGS

Discuss how the two readings this week explore different aspects of a person’s identity. Why does Amy try to hide parts of her identity? Why do you think the speaker in “Underface” presents a certain identity to the world? Do you think the characters are disadvantaged if they choose to hide parts of who they are?

Have you seen any really memorable online musical performances? Write about the one that sticks out in your mind and why.

What are you looking most forward to this summer? Write about it. Is this an activity that may be unavailable to you because of the pandemic.

Do you have a favourite spot in your house or yard? Write to explain it, how you feel when you are there and why it is special for you.

It looks like the travel within NB will be our only option for a while. Search Tourism NB’s website and choose a place that you would like to visit and write about it. Explain why you chose it, how long it would take to get there and who would you like to travel with.

In they Hayes Davis’ poem “Etiquette,” a speaker describes their struggles with their stutter. “The Medicine Bag” with “Etiquette” and discuss what the speakers in the two texts are embarrassed about. How does the narrator in “The Medicine Bag” eventually grow to accept the things he was  embarrassed about? How does this compare to the speaker’s approach to their insecurities in “Etiquette”? How does this embarrassment negatively impact them?

This is our last week of online/home learning. Thank you to those who have completed work. It has been a pleasure reading your submissions and providing you feedback. Its been a learning curve for all of us but those of you who completed this work have done admirably in the face of stressful and difficult expectations. 

CANADIAN IDENTITY 9U

This week's activities revolve around Canada's government, how it is structured and how it works. There are two activities that can be returned to me via email. The first is a multiple choice; just write the number and the answer (written out) beside it. For the second acvitity, you may answer the questions in an email and return this to me.

  • There is a significant amount of reading this week but only two short assignments. You will be examining the topics of Sexual Assualt & Homicide. There will be two example cases of Homicide with questions for you to answer for your own practice (the Expert Opinion is offered directly after each case).

3.    Writing Activites

  • a.      “They’re Made Out of Meat” is an allegory (a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one) about prejudice. What do you think is the author’s deeper message about how we prejudge and make assumptions? How does this influence human behavior?
  • b.     Place yourself in the position of a scientist. How would you define what does and does not constitute life? How does these two texts challenge your understanding of what defines life?

4.     Complete ANY 2 of the attached options for Quickwrites this week (I have one listed for every day and while you are free to do it every day for 5 minutes (go for longer if you wish…but don’t go past 15minutes), aim for 2.  Feel free to share these with me via email, Microsoft Teams or on our weekly call. I encourage you to share your writing with somebody at home too.

This week's work is related to the Rights and Responsibilities of Canadians. There are two worksheets to complete.

1. Road to Rights Timelines - this will require some internet research and is a matching activity where you match the year to an event in the development of Rights related to LGBTQ2+ Canadians, Canadians with disabilities, Black Canadians, and women in Canada

2. Rights, Freedoms, and Responsibilities worksheet - this information will come from your own ideas and thoughts

Law 120

This week we will examine: standard defences in court cases and see how they are used in Week 8a file.  In week 8b file, we will specifically examine Assault.

Work includes:

Week 8a - a lot of reading followed by a Check Your Understanding matching (please copy the chart and email to me for review). The case studies of how defences are used are for your review and understanding. Read through, answer, and then check your work with the answers provided in the same document.

Week 8b - a review of definition of assualt, a referral to NB Public Legal Information and Service website (a must read), a case study for review and then an Assignment Case Study
