Home Learning this week takes a big leap in history from last week's look at Confederation (1867) up to World War I. There seems to be a lot of reading, but if you break it up into 6 small half hour sessions as I suggest, it is very easy and will serve to give you a great overview of this time period in history.  

The chart to complete is included with the package below; you can just type into the boxes to make the notes as you read. Its a ready made graphic organizer.

LANGUAGE ARTS – Gr.6

Mon. May 11th – Fri. May 15th

1.     Read 20 minutes silently everyday.

2.     Read and respond to this week’s Common Lit assignments (one fiction, one non-fiction). “The House Dog & the Wolf” (fable) & “The Wild Horses of Assateague” (informational text).

3.     Writing Activites x 2: Do the following ONLY after you finished both CommonLit readings this week. Please respond to these in a paragraph each and submit to me via email together

• a.      Watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouvC-pZBKew  and then respond to the following writing assignment: This video, created by students, depicts Aesop’s fable through Claymation. Compare the video with the original story. How do the visual elements help underscore(bring out) the fable’s themes?
• b.     After reading “The Wild Horses of Assateague,” discuss in a paragraph the following: In the text, the author discusses how people leave the wild horses alone. Do you think that humans should be more involved with keeping the horses alive and healthy? Why or why not?

4.     Complete ANY 2 of the attached options for Quickwrites this week (I have one listed for every day and while you are free to do it every day for 5 minutes (go for longer if you wish…but don’t go past 15minutes), aim for 2.  Feel free to share these with me via email, Microsoft Teams or on our weekly call. I encourage you to share your writing with somebody at home too.

2. Read and respond to this week’s Common Lit assignments (one fiction, one non-fiction). “Funeral” (short story memoir) & “Diary of a Teenage Refugee” (informational text).

3.     Writing Activity: Journal the alphabet with words or phrases (ie: A=April winds blow cold against my cheeks, B=, C=, D=ducks float in the river, playing the day). Take notes on your surroundings in nature to guide you in doing this activity. Write words you see, hear, smell or think. (this can be done over a few days but keep it connected to nature and those things you see, hear, smell, feel)

4.     Complete ANY 2 of the attached options for Quickwrites this week (I have one listed for every day and while you are free to do it every day for 5 minutes (go for longer if you wish…but don’t go past 15minutes), aim for 2.  Feel free to share these with me via email, Microsoft Teams or on our weekly call. While this week's Law 120 assignments are heavy on reading, the assignments to complete are all Check Your Understanding assignments. As you complete them, please submit them so I can review and give you the thumbs up to continue.

This week's home learning activities are taken from the Historica document "Canada Past & Present: A Citizenship Education Guide."

You will find these activities more straightforward than what we have been doing and ALL activities going forward will be similar and will deal with either Canadian history or Canadian citizenship.

Firstly, I'd like to say how pleased I am with the work that has been returned to me to date for feedback and review. It has been exceptionally well done all around. Thank you.

Secondly, it may seem like the work below is an awful lot. The reason for that is the clarification from the Department of Education and the communique from the District that sets out the explanation for Grade 12s for recieving a credit in courses. In order to do, they must prove they meet the curricular outcomes and as such may be expected to do more than the 2.5-3 hours of work a week. As such, I have provided below lessons for 2 curricular outcomes. If you are hoping to recieve 'Credit' rather than simply 'Enrolled' in Law 120, the expectation is you will complete both and I will continue to provide you feedback.

Here are the two latest lessons for Law 120. They can be done in any order and deal with the following 2 outcomes:

1.6: Analyse the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to identify the rights, freedoms adn responsibilities of New Brunswick citizens

1.10: identify and describe the structure, powers and jurisdictions of the federal and provincial courts.
