Tues. May 19^th  – Fri. May 22^nd

1.     Read 20 minutes silently everyday.

2.     Read and respond to this week’s Common Lit assignments (one fiction, one non-fiction) in this order. “Columbus & the Egg” (historical fiction) & “Clash of /Cultures” (informational text).

3.     Writing Activites: Do the following ONLY after you finished both CommonLit readings this week. Please respond to this in a paragraph and submit to me via email

• a.      Watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aF_unlvjccA This animated educational video discusses Christopher Columbus’ journeys to the Americas and what his journeys meant for native people living there and for the world. Be advised that the video discusses some of Columbus and his men’s brutal treatment of native populations. Writing Activity: How does this video affect your view of Columbus as an influential and creative leader? Do you believe that he deserves to be remembered as a leader and a hero? 

4.     Complete ANY 2 of the attached options for Quickwrites this week (I have one listed for every day and while you are free to do it every day for 5 minutes (go for longer if you wish…but don’t go past 15minutes), aim for 2.  Feel free to share these with me via email, Microsoft Teams or on our weekly call. I encourage you to share your writing with somebody at home too.

Tuesday	Persuasive Prompt Tuesday: The first lesson of school every day should be exercise. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Argue one way or the other.
Wednesday	Explanatory Wednesday: The Chinese celebrate New Year with a dragon dance. How do you celebrate New Year? What other special days do you observe? In an essay, explain a celebration or ritual that you know about. Tell what is usually done and why. Explain it to a reader who is new to the event.

Friday	Descriptive Friday: Imagine that the appliances in a family’s kitchen could talk when the family was not present.  Write a story about what they would have to say to each other.
