It is hard to believe that we only have 6 weeks of school left, and only 4 Mondays!  This Friday we will be travelling to Miramichi Valley High School to the High Elements course.  Students will need to wear comfortable, athletic clothing and shoes. Next Tuesday, we will be having our unit test on Weather.  We will be reviewing all this week for the test.   Have a great week!

We have had such a fun past few days!  On Friday afternoon, Colleen Barry was here to do some fun dancing with the students outside.  On Tuesday of this week, we had the Blast Off for the Mango "Go for 42" program.  Our entire school met in the gym to hear from Mango representatives and sponsors of the program.  After, we all went for a walk.  Grades 3-12 walked to the Bartholomew Road and back, approximately 3 km.  This morning, we all had a treat in the gym.  Mr. Mason won the "Teacher Torture" campaign, which meant that a student from each grade got to throw a pie in his face.  Alex Jardine was the lucky student from Grade 5.  Mrs. Sturgeon was the lucky teacher that got to throw a pie at Mr. Mason.  Please check out the Photo Gallery to see pictures.  As teachers have meetings for the next 2 days, students will have the rest of the week off.   Mme Jen

On Thursday, April 21st, our classroom lights stayed off, and we used the Smart Board sparingly.  This was done to raise awareness of global climate change. On Wednesday of this week, students were asked to wear green to raise awareness for organ and tissue donations.

Congratulations to Kassidy Lyons who placed 3rd at the District Spelling Bee, and to Stephanie Hayne for placing 1st at the Provincial Archery competition in Bathurst on Saturday. I hope that everyone had a restful and fun March break! The week before March break we had some  winter carnival fun here at school.  Check out our image gallery to see some pictures of our theme days and our outdoor fun on Friday! This week we have been diving into our work once again, with a particular focus on Science this week. We had a unit test on physical and chemical changes, and finished the week with our school Science Fair.  Congratulations to Maddie and Olivia, Amber and Hannah and Brent and Tristen who will be taking each of their projects to the District Science Fair.  Also, honorable mentions were given to Justice, Kassidy, Jamie and Mackenzie.  I am so proud of all our students that did their best. A quick reminder that tomorrow, February 23rd, we are asking students and staff to wear pink for bullying awareness.  Also, all staff members will be watching to "catch students caring".  If they do, students will get their name in a draw for prizes at the end of the week. Also, this Thursday, February 24th is the 100th day of school.  Students are encouraged to display "100" in fun, interesting ways! Have a great week! Mme Jen

Happy Valentine's Day!   On Monday we celebrated Valentine's Day with a little party, some music, treats and of course, valentines!  We were supposed to go skating, but the weather would not cooperate.   We will try again this coming Monday. On Thursday this week, we had our "défilé de mode."  Our fashion show was very entertaining to say the least.  Check out the pictures in the image gallery.  Have a great weekend! Mme Jen

A reminder to parents that this Thursday, February 10th, we will be going canooing at M.V.H.S.  We will be leaving at 8:35 am and returning sometime during the dinner hour.  Students will need to bring a towel, a bathing suit, dry clothes, a snack for recess and their lunch. On Monday, February 14th, I will be taking students to the Blackville rink from 2pm-3pm for their Phys. Ed. class.  Please be sure that students dress in warm clothes and bring skates and a helmet. Our last week of Intensive French was a busy one!  Many of our students and teachers missed time this week due to colds and flu, me included.  Despite feeling under the weather, we got a lot done.  On Tuesday, Wedneday and Thursday, the students of 5JH were interviewed individually by an employee of the Dept. of Education.  He took each student on their own and interviewed them on a wide variety of topics, to be able to assess their oral proficiency.  He told me that he was very impressed with my students.  Way to go 5JH!  Also, students completed day 1 of a written Provincial Assessment in French.  Since we had so many students out this week, I am going to complete this assessment on Monday. On Wednesday, grades 5-12 were treated to a presentation by 2 people from the "Free the Children" organization, which tries to encourage young people to make positive changes in their community and globally.  On Friday, we had a lot of students missing due to illness, the Croft cup and interventions.  Even so, we had a very relaxing day to finish off our IF program.  We had some free time in the computer lab, cleaned out our desks and rearranged the class. Have a great weekend!

Last week was a wonderful week to be a teacher or student!  We had a great time skating with the Premier of NB on Monday.  The students we so well behaved, and were treated to hot chocolate after their skate.  On Wednesday we had a snow day.  On Thursday we left right after announcements to go to 9 Pine for our breakfast.  Students ordered from me in French before we went up.  So, very soon after we arrived, our hot, delicious breakfasts started coming out.  We all ate well, and had a great time chatting together.  We even had a surprise guest appearance by my 2 year-old son, Thomas, who helped me eat my breakfast!!  To round out the perfect week, we had another snow day on Friday.  I hope that everyone had as great of a week as I did!  Check out our pictures in our gallery! This week we need to work hard to get ready for our 2 assessments that are coming up.  Have a great week! Mme Jen

I hope that you all enjoyed your snow day yesterday as much as I did!  Next week, we have lots of exciting things going on, that I wanted to make sure you knew about. On Monday, Premier David Alward will be at the school to meet and talk with students.  At 9:35 am, the Grade 5’s and 7’s will be going to the Blackville rink to skate with the Premier for 1 hour.  Students need to bring with them a pair of skates and a helmet.  Please put the skates in a bag (school bag, canvas shopping bag with guards if you have them) to avoid hurting someone.  If you are free, you are welcome to come to the rink to help out tying skates! On Thursday of next week, I will be taking my class to 9 Pine restaurant  for breakfast.  The cost is $5.50.  Students will have 3 options to choose from, all at the same price.  Students will order their breakfast from me in French.  If the cost is a problem, please send a note with your child and we will take care of it. I wanted to give the students a chance to use their French in a “real-life” setting.  Please send the money as soon as you can, so that I can get the money organized before we go. We only have 3 weeks left of the Intensive French program.  I will be sorry to see it end, as many of the students will.  All Grade 5 students in the province will be doing a written assessment at the end of the program.  This is nothing to worry or stress about.  We do all the preparation in class, and the marks students receive have no bearing on their report cards.  Also, 3 classes in the district were chosen to take part in the oral assessment.  Our class was one of them.  Students will be interviewed by someone hired by the province to assess their oral proficiency.  Again, these results have no bearing on student’s report cards.  They are meant to measure how students as a group are doing in the IF program.  Have a great weekend!
What a fantastic week in Grade 5.  This week all groups finished presenting their dream homes.  They are on display outside our classroom if you get a chance to drop by.  Tuesday, students were treated to their Christmas dinner.  Lots of students chose to have the delicious turkey dinner prepared by our girls in the cafeteria.  Despite the surprise fire alarm during lunch, students got their bellies full!  On Wednesday, we made a giant bowl of fruit salad made and prepared by our class.  Check out our gallery to see lots of pictures of it.  My class still has that sweet citrus smell!! Today, Thursday, we left on a bus with Mrs. Sturgeon's Grade 1 class first thing this morning.  We arrived at the Miramichi Seniors Home at approx. 9:30am and set up.  By 10 am the room was full of seniors and workers.  Our students sang "Vive le vent", Mrs. Sturgeon's class sang "Do You Hear What I Hear" and together we sang "We Wish You a Merry Christmas."  After the singing, 2 Grade 1 students read a story about a gingerbread man.  Then, our students were ;paired with a senior to make a gingerbread man craft.  Both young and old had a wonderful morning. I was so proud of the way the students behaved on the bus and with the seniors.  They were helpful, patient and really seemed to enjoy themselves.  I believe we were all filled with a bit of the Christmas spirit by helping others.  On that same note, we recieved a beautiful "Thank You" card from David Wilson and his school picture.  We wish him well this month as he goes for his surgery. Merry Christmas! Mme Jen
