It was another busy week in Grade 5!  We are finishing up our unit on "La famille étendue" by thinking of wild and wacky ideas for our dream home.  Also, we have been incorporating halloween activities all week.  Next Tuesday, please send a pumpkin with your child.  It can be as small or as large as you wish.  We will be decorating these as a post-reading activity for one of our books.  On Wednesday, children can bring their costumes with them to school.  They will be changing into them after lunch. Have a fun, safe weekend!

Our first few weeks of school have flown by!  We have been busy reviewing the basics of conversational French.  We are now moving on to have students describe themselves, and others.  Also, we are talking about our families.  Over the next few weeks students will see a big change in what they are able to do.  As it is I am only speaking in French all day, and students always know what we are supposed to be doing.  That is quite impressive for only 2 weeks in!  Have  a great week, Madame Jen

Welcome to Grade 5!  I hope that everyone had a fun, safe summer.  Things are going to be a little different for students in Grade 5 students.  For the first half of the year, until the end of January, one class of Grade 5 students will be with me following the Intensive French Program, while the other class will be with Mrs. Manderville following a compacted version of the regular Grade 5 program.  At the beginning of February we will switch classes.   I am very excited to have the chance to teach all of the Grade 5 students.  See you on the first day of school! Mme Jen

Dear parents, For our end of year field trip, the 2 Grade 5 classes will be going to Camp Sheldrake on Monday, June 11th.  On that day, students will spend the day rock climbing, canoeing, doing arts and crafts, archery and games.  Students will need to bring their lunch and drinks, sunscreen, insect repellent, a towel and change of clothes and both sneakers and sandals. (They cannot do the rock climbing without sneakers, and will need sandals for the canoeing)  The cost is $15 per student. Please have this paid by Thursday, June 7th.  If there is any problem with the cost, please send a note with your child and we will work something out.  We want every child to have this wonderful experience. Mme Jen ** If any parent is willing to volunteer for the day to help the Camp Sheldrake counselors supervise the groups, please let us know. (Students will be divided into 4 groups)

We are at the end of another short week.  Tomorrow, May 3rd there are meetings for teachers in Miramichi.  On Friday, May 4th we will be travelling to Moncton for Subject Council. This week, we continued to work on our clothing unit.  Please check out the updated pictures in our "mannequin" image gallery.  Also, one of our students has been chosen to be "Fire Chief for the Day"!  Abby Pond was chosen for this honour, and as a treat, our entire class was treated to a pizza party today! Have a safe, fun long weekend! Mme Jen

We had a fantastic trip to Burke's Diner this morning.  Earlier in the week students ordered from me in class where we had a mock restaurant set up, complete with waitress wearing an apron!  Students spoke in French while at the restaurant, and really enjoyed each other's company and of course the food!  The girls at Burke's were so good to the students, and delivered hot meals in a very short amount of time, for an excellent price.  We will definitely be going back with other classes! Dear parents, We have a few important dates coming up in Grade 5 that I wanted to explain.   April 18th- We will be going canoeing at M.V.H.S. pool.  The Grade 5’s have done this for the past several years.  Paul McKinnon has already spent an hour with students explaining some of the fundamentals of canoe safety.  On this day, we will be leaving the school at 8:40am, and returning around 12:30pm.  Students will need to have an appropriate bathing suit, towel, their morning snack and their lunch that does not require heating.  Students will be eating on the side of the pool while others are canoeing.  There is no cost for this activity.   April 19th- Scholastic book order due.   April 20th- No school for students   April 26th- As part of the Intensive French program, students learned all about food.  I have provided them with a French menu from Burke’s.  They will be ordering from me here at the school, and I will phone in the orders.  We will be going from 10:30-11:30, so they would only need a very light lunch packed that day.  The cost is $5 including drink, meal, taxes and tip.  Please have this paid by April 25th.  If you would rather your child did not order, they can bring their own snack with them, and still eat with the rest of us.   **Also, starting tomorrow, April 13th, Shelley Donahue will be meeting with Grade 5 students to teach them about drug and alcohol awareness. This program is 5 classes of 1 hour each. Mme Jen

This week we continued to work on our food unit.  Students came up with some very interesting recipes for hamburgers, we played food bingo and talked about what we love to eat, and what we don't love to eat.  To finish off our unit, I will be taking both Grade 5 classes to Burke's diner to have lunch.  They will be ordering from me in French, off of a French menu.   The cost for this will be $5.  I will let you know next week what date was chosen.  Happy Easter! Mme Jen

We had a very busy week last week, getting into the groove of the IF Program.  On Friday, we celebrated all of our hard work with a day of fun at the Eco-Centre.  Students learned all about curling, and got the chance to play several games.  This week, students will be having their bake sale on Thursday, to raise money for the SPCA.    Friday, there is no school for students, as it is a Minster's Exemption Day.  Have a great week! Mme Jen

As you have no doubt heard, this past Wednesday the Grade 5 classes switched for the second term.  5M is now in my room, and will be following the Intensive French program for the rest of the year.  5H is now with Mrs. Manderville, following the English Grade 5 program.  Both groups were both excited and a little apprehensive about the change, but everything is going really well so far!
