We have been busy learning about our homes, and how to describe them.  We also took part in an interdisciplinary unit on apples.  This included reading a book on apples, discussing them and doing a craft.  On Monday, students rotated to different classes to participate in activities related to apples.  They learned amazing apple facts, wrote a poem, did a craft and listened to songs about apples. We finished the day with a "Big Crunch" with all students biting into a juicy apple at the same time.       On Tuesday, Grade 5 got to show their leadership skills.  Everyone in Grade 5 was given a special job to help the primary teachers and students with their apple activities.  Some students read to the children, some were our photographers, some were in charge of keeping us on track by telling us when to change activities and most did lots of little jobs to help primary teachers with their activities.  I was very proud of "mes petits chou-choux".  Every teacher in Primary told me that my students were mature, helpful and good role models.  :) Mme Jen

Next week, students will begin learning about their home and all the rooms in it.  They will also begin to design their dream home.  Also, on Tuesday we will be going geo-caching with Mr. Savoy.  This is a fun, interactive activity outside.  Students will need to use team work to find all the caches.  Please note that there are meetings for teachers next Thursday and Friday.  This will lead into the Thanksgiving long weekend, with no school on Monday. Have a great weekend. Mme Jen

Dear Parents, I have received everyone's Student Information Profile with your phone numbers.  I was also hoping to get parent emails.  Sometimes I don't need to call, or it is hard to get in contact with some people because of work.  If you are interested, please send me an email at jennifer.hallihan@nbed.nb.ca  and I will save you in my contact list.  Thanks, Mme Jen

June 3rd, 2013 Dear parents of 5M, We have a few important dates coming up in Grade 5 that I wanted to explain.   June 12th – Pen Pal Outing We will be travelling to MVHS with our pen pals from NSEE.  Students will spend the day paired up with their pen pal, both swimming and climbing.  The climbing will be done outside, weather permitting.  As this was part of our Intensive French program, students will be expected to speak in French as much as they can. On this day, we will be leaving the school at 8:40am, and returning by 3pm.  Students will need to have an appropriate bathing suit, towel, their morning snack and their lunch that does not require heating. Also, they will need good sneakers for climbing, plenty of drinks, sunscreen and fly repellent.  There is no cost for this activity.   June 18th- Elementary Awards Ceremony Our Awards ceremony will be held in the gym.  I am told it will start at 9am.  There will be a talk mail to confirm this before this date.   June 19th- Track and Field Day Students will be travelling to J.M.H. to participate in the annual Track and Field Day hosted by our school district.  Students will need to dress for the weather.  They will need to bring their snacks, lunch and drinks for the day.  Students need to wear sunscreen. Please apply this before they come to school, and send some more to reapply throughout the day.  Students may want to bring a blanket or towel to lay on the ground and fly repellent, but these are not necessary.   *Because of costs, our Grade 5’s are not going to Camp Sheldrake this year.  Instead, we are planning our own “fun” day here at the school for students.  It will include archery, taught by Mr. Mason, outdoor activities and we will be ordering in our lunch.  As the date approaches I will send another note home with the details. We had an excellent presentation today about Internet Safety presented by Joey Savoy.  Please ask your child about what we learned.  It is a wonderful way to start a conversation about this very important issue.  The Internet is a valuable resource, but as we all know it can be a dangerous place for children if they are not prepared. Bonjour!  As we get closer to Christmas holidays, we have lots of exciting activities for students.  This morning they had an interactive presentation from a member of CPAWS to talk about biodiversity and the environment. On Friday, December 14th, all Grade 5 students will be travelling to MVHS for canoeing.  We have done this for several years, and  it is always a great success.  On Friday students will need: -An appropriate bathing suit (they can wear a t-shirt and shorts over the bathing suit if they are more comfortable) -Drinks and lunch for the day.  There are no microwaves there, so something that doesn't need to be heated up. -A towel Next Tuesday, December 18th will be our Christmas Concert.  It will be at 9am in the gym.  Our students are very excited to present our 2 songs and to play the recorder.
