Our school website is finally back up and running!  A lot has happened since my last post.  5H had their fashion show to end their unit on clothing.  Please check out the most recent gallery to see photos of this.  For the month of January, we worked on a unit on domestic animals.  This is an interdisciplinary unit being done will all Grade 5 students, with their Reading Buddies from Kindergarten.  We will be ending this unit with a visit to the Miramichi SPCA.  Students will be presenting projects the last week of February.  These are to be done on an animal that could be at the SPCA. (dog, cat, hamster, guinea pig, bird, rabbit)  These projects are to be in English, and can be presented under a Smart Board format, or a standard posterboard presentation. Mme Jen

I hope that everyone had a safe, restful holiday season..I know that I did!  This week we finished up our unit on clothing.  Next week we are beginning our unit on animals.  This will be an interdisciplinary unit with both Grade 5's and both Kindergarten classes participating.  Check out the pictures of student's work this week! Only one week of school left to go before our Christmas holidays.  Despite the excitement in the air, students are still working hard in class.  We are continuing to learn about clothing in different ways.  Today, students even wrote poems about clothing in French!  A reminder that the Christmas Concert will be in the school gym at 9am on Tuesday of next week.  Hope to see you there! I'm sure that many of you are getting into the holiday spirit, as we enter December.  We have begun our unit on clothing.  I have attached some pictures and videos of student work.  As well, there are some audio files of students reading books in French about clothing. There will be no school tomorrow, Friday as there is parent-teacher interviews.  These are tonight from 6:00-8:30 and Friday morning 8:30-11:30.  I hope to see you then! Mme Jen

My goodness, I can't believe how long it has been since my last post.  We have been busy here in 5H!  Here are a few things that we have been doing: Our Remembrance Day ceremony went off very well.  Congratulations to Cassidy Coughlan, Kendra Jardine and Grace Steeves who read the poem "Au champ d'honneur" at the ceremony.  It is the French version of "In Flanders Fields".  I was so proud of how well they did!  Also, congratulations to Jenica Gallan for delivering the "Thank You" at the end of the ceremony.  It was heart-felt and well delivered.  Way to go Jenica! On Thursday, we had another presentation from Kouchibouquac Park.  The students really enjoy these. On Monday, students had a presentation by "Mad Science."  You will be getting a notice in your child's book bag today explaining the program that they will be putting on after school. In class, we have been doing a lot of writing.  We wrote our first letter to our pen pals from N.S.E.E.  We are anxiously awaiting their reply! Also, we have been working on writing narratives.  This is our first time trying this in Grade 5, and certainly the students' first time trying this in French.  So far the stories have been impressive! I have been busy working on report cards.  These will be going out early next week. Have a great week! Mme Jen

We had a spooky week in 5H this week.  On Monday we dressed in our costumes and gave out treats. Yummy.  Please check out the image gallery to see all of my spooks. It was a fitting way to begin our unit on food.  We have been "diggin in" to this topic, and students are learning a lot in a short time. A reminder that there is no school for students tomorrow, November 4th as there are parent-teacher interviews for the High School and all other teachers will be in meetings. Also, please note that the school Remembrance Day ceremony will be in the gym on November 10th at 10am. Happy Birthday Matthew McNeil! Mme Jen

Another great week in Intensive French.  We are continuing to work on our dream homes.  Students are in groups, and are now writing about their homes.  We will begin presenting these next week.  This afternoon we decorated pumpkins.  Thank you to all parents who brought pumpkins in. I had a couple, so everyone got the chance to decorate one. On Monday, students are welcome to bring in their costumes.  They won't be putting them on until after lunch.  In the afternoon, students can pass out treats if they wish.  We have 24 students in our class. Have a great weekend!

Due to a family tragedy, I missed 3 days of school this week.  The substitute teacher was very impressed with my class, and had a wonderful 3 days with them. Since my return we have continued to work on our dream homes.  Students are now in groups and are working on designing one large dream home for their group.  Students can now take their snow globes home.  The rest of the school was very impressed with them! This week, we completed our unit on extended families and began designing our dream homes.   We have had some great ideas, like a magical toilet, a jacuzzi filled with ice cream, a mirror that tells the future and a table and chairs that dance!  On Friday, I will be sending home the Interim reports.  This is a new report that serves as a "mini-report card".  Please review how your child is doing, and if there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me at the schoo. This week we have continued to talk about our families.  Now, we have expanded into extended family, including aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents.  Some students have very big families! On Wednesday, our school participated in the Terry Fox run.  Our class walked to the Bartholomew Road and back, which is approx. 3 KM.  Also, students brought in a loonie to donate to cancer research. Have a great weekend!

This Thursday evening there will be a meet the teacher event from 6:00pm until 6:30pm for parents of elementary students.  Mrs. Manderville and I will be presenting together, as we will both be teaching all Grade 5 students. Hope to see you there!

Our first week certainly seemed to go by fast!  We spent most of last week getting settled in and learning our routines.  We are now in our 2nd week, and by far most of the day is completely in French.  Students have transitioned easily as I increase the amount of French being spoken.  They are a keen, well-mannered group of students.  I know we are going to have a fantastic year! I have asked for students to bring in headphones from home if possible. These are to use in the computer lab.  You can buy these at a dollar store.  Have a great week!

Welcome to Grade 5!  I hope that everyone had a fun, safe summer.  Things are going to be a little different this year than in the past for Grade 5 students.  For the first half of the year, until the end of January, one class of Grade 5 students will be with me following the Intensive French Program, while the other class will be with Mrs. Manderville following a compacted version of the regular Grade 5 program.  At the beginning of February we will switch classes.   I am very excited to have the chance to teach all of the Grade 5 students.  See you on the first day of school!

I am very excited to announce that my class, along with the other grade 5 class, will be travelling to Camp Sheldrake on June 17th for our end of the year field trip.  This is a big year for the students as it is their last year in Elementary School. The trip to Camp Sheldrake is always reserved for the Grade 5’s to celebrate their years in elementary school.    They will leave the school at 8:35am and return just before dismissal at 3pm.  Their day will be packed with activities such as repelling, canoeing, archery, art and games.  They will have to bring a bagged lunch that day, as we will be only taking a brief lunch break from 12:30-1pm.  Also, please make sure they have sunscreen, bug spray, towel and bathing suit in case they have the chance to go swimming in the river that day if a lifeguard is available.  If it is raining on this day, please come prepared for the weather with umbrellas and rain attire.   The cost of the trip is $15/student and it is well worth the price considering a day at this camp for your child during the summer months is $40.  Hopefully all the students will be able to finish the year off with this amazing adventure.  The money for this will be due in to me by June 13th.    I know the students are going to love it!!!   Also, on June 7th, we will be travelling to French Fort Cove for some Geo-caching with our pen pals from N.S.E.E.  There is no cost for this trip.   On June 22nd, we will be going to J.M.H. in Miramichi for our track and field day.  Students need to bring their lunch, lots of water, sunscreen and insect repellent.    Mme Jen

What an exciting day!  We spent the morning at M.V.H.S. doing the High Elements Course.  We each took a turn climbing up a ladder, then using "staples" to climb the rest of the way until we were 25 feet high.  Then we had to walk across a catwalk or a cable to the other side and back.  Finally we had to drop off and be lowered down by Mr. McKinnon or Mr. Pinder. This afternoon Mrs. Lori Brophy came to our class to teach us the fine art of calligraphy or "beautiful writing."  Check out our pictures of fun things we have been doing!
