I haven't assigned any homework all week.  The students should just be working on their Social Studies assignments, which ever ones they choose, as there are only two weeks left for them to accumulate their 75 point total.  I have about half of the class ready to present one of their projects, so I am hoping that students are working on these projects on their own time and not leaving it to the last week to do all three projects.  As always, students are to read for 20 minutes every night.  As a parent, you should questions your child about what they read.  Just ask casual questions about what they liked or didn't like about the book, if they would recommend the book to a friend, or what they predict will happen in the next chapters.

I hope everyone is very well rested after an extended long weekend, and all prepared for some hard work this week!  Sadly it is Mr. Case's last week at Blackville Elementary School and I know my class is going to miss him immensely!  He has been super with the students and staff.  We want to take this time to wish him luck on his future endeavors!  This week, we are going to working on our Ancient China projects and hopefully there will be some students that are ready to present them to us.  I know Mr. Case would love to see some of these before he leaves.  We also have to work on our chicken mummies, and continue to take the water out of them.  We are on our last lab for Science, which is a really fun one.  We are going to learn all about chemical changes and write secret messages in lemon juice.  The last lab also means a test will be coming up soon and I will be giving the study notes out for the students to start studying for this. Also, this weekend is the Soccer Jamboree, so I am hoping that all the soccer gurus in Grade 5TH make their way to the soccer field to show the rest of the district what the Golden Eagles are made of!  Go EAGLES!!!!

The school soccer jamboree that was postponed due to inclement weather last Fall has been rescheduled to May 15th.  Both Blackville Teams are scheduled to play at NSEE at 9am. The tournament schedule was sent home with the students that were on the team last year and the forms were supposed to be returned by May 1st, so the coaches could see how many players are available to attend.  The jamboree is always a fun event, hopefully Blackville School will be well represented.  Go EAGLES!!

The class has been busy mummifying chickens for our final Ancient Egypt project.  The students are loving this project and are learning so much from this hands-on activity.  Enjoy the photos of them, elbow deep in two week old chickens, but there is no smell, because they are doing a great job...

REMEMBER!!!  No school on Thursday or Friday!!  Enjoy your long weekend, do your homework and see you on Monday!
One of the students, Laura Sturgeon, in our class wrote a poem for the Mother's Day Contest through LIFE Radio Station.  It was too good not to share!  Way to go Laura, I hope you win the prize for your wonderful mom!      My Mom's a Hard Worker   My mom's a lean mean working machine, And if you don't mind I'll tell you, All the things she does for me. She washes the dishes and scrubs the floor, I can't count, there is so much more!   My mom works vigorously day and night, Not just for me, but my brother too. She must be so tired at the end of her day, Selflessly she sacrifices herself to her family. My mom honestly and truly amazes me!   Every night before I go to bed, She gives me a big bear hug, And sweet gentil kisses on my forehead. I love my mom and she loves me! It's easy to see how lucky I am to be ME!

Since it is a 4 day long weekend for the students, I am trying to get some things finished since we are missing 2 days of school, I am using this opportunity to tie up some loose ends.  On Monday students have to get their Science Lab and French assignment  signed and Ancient China project form filled out and signed.  As well, they should be working on their Ancient China project any chance that they get, because it is due the end of May, and that will be here before you know it.  In addition to all of this the students also have to finish a project that many have already completed.  It is the final project for our novel study called "Door in the Wall."  Have a great long weekend!!!
This is found on the District 16 Website, I thought it might be of interest: By encouraging students to participate in “Go for 42” we are helping Children & Youth meet the recommended activity target. For more information on “Go for 42” and for the registration form for the Mango Kid’s Fun Run on July 4th, see the pdf document attached to the following news item. http://www.district16.nbed.nb.ca/news/go-42-2010
The Mango Kids Fun Run is back in action.  Students are encouraged to walk or run on a daily basis, 1-2 kilometers.  I am hoping that Blackville school will have great representation participating in this run, as I will be there with bells on with my own two children.  Croft always wins the trophy for the greatest participation, lets try and out-do them!  I am sending home the registration forms today with the students.  If you are interested in completing this fun run, that will happen on July 4th, 2010 at 11:00am at the Miramichi Civic Center, please fill out the registration form and bring it back to me by June 7th.  Students will receive fun shoe tags at these increments 5km, 10km, 20km, 25km, 30km and 40kms.  They also received a running log and I encourage the students to keep track of the kilometers that they walk or run in their log.  This exciting event is FREE and all participating students will receive a free t-shirt on race day and a medal for finishing their 42km on July 4th at the finish line.  I hope to see you all there during our summer vacation!!  GO FOR 42!!!!
