Monday, December 11th – suffix -ion , -ation –sion , -tion from Anglo-Saxon meaning the act of/state of/result of doing something. The real suffix is –ion. Putting s or t in front of –ion is simply determined by the spelling of the root. Usually a noun,

Examples.

tension – the state of being tense

attention – the state of being attentive

elevation – the state of being elevated or raised

union – the state of being united

education – the act of being educated.

Wednesday, December 13th – suffix -ent/-ant from the Latin meaning causing a specific action. Often an adjective -ent and –ant sound alike because of the schwa (the vowel sound in an unstressed syllable). –ent is used somewhat more often than –ant

Examples:

absorbent – causing to be absorbed

abundant – causing to abound (be plentiful)

elegant – adjective causing to be fancy

imminent – causing to be close to happening

obedient – causing to obey

Strategy:To multiply any number by 6, multiply it by 5 and then add a double.
