Mon. May 25th  – Fri. May 29th

1.     Read 20 minutes silently everyday.

 2.     Read and respond to this week’s Common Lit assignments. They are all poems and thus shorter in length. However, they require the same amount of attention as they will require multiple reads to truly understand the meaning/theme. As such, there are no writing activities this week.

  • a.      Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe
  • b.     If” by Rudyard Kipling
  • c.      In Flanders Fields” by Lt. Col. John McRae

3.     Complete ANY 2 of the attached options for Quickwrites this week (I have one listed for every day and while you are free to do it every day for 5 minutes (go for longer if you wish…but don’t go past 15minutes), aim for 2.  Feel free to share these with me via email, Microsoft Teams or on our weekly call. I encourage you to share your writing with somebody at home too.

4.     Quickwrites

Monday

Narrative Monday:

You are on your way home when zombies begin to take over your town. You've never believed in zombies, but now you see them with your own eyes. Write a science fiction story telling what the zombies do, what happens to everyone you know, and what you do about it. Make sure you create and describe characters, conflict, and the setting.

Tuesday

Persuasive Prompt Tuesday:

Some day, you and your classmates will be the adults in charge of running the world. Is that thought exciting or terrifying? Which of your classmates would make the best Premier of New Brunswick or Prime Minister of Canada? Write an editorial announcing a bid for Prime Minister or Premier by a classmate of yours (or yourself). Tell why the person would make an excellent Premier/Prime Minister, provide the person’s qualifications, and urge readers to vote for the candidate.

Wednesday

Explanatory Wednesday:

Pets are not people. After all, dogs don’t go to school and cats don’t hold down jobs. But pet owners often consider their dogs and cats to be members of their families. In what ways are pets like people and in what ways are they not? Write a comparison-contrast essay explaining the similarities and differences between pets and people.
